"Exploring our Visual Landscape: Visual Literacy in the Language Classroom"

by Dr. Sylvia Karastathi

Moving from visualisation in the mind’s eye to exploring the communicative possibilities of still and moving images in the language classroom, this talk will challenge the traditional function of images in the classroom and address them within an emerging agenda of visual literary and multiliteracies pedagogy that informs new curricula in English Language Teaching.

Dr Sylvia Karastathi is the Head of the English Department at New York College and teaches courses on Methodology of Language Teaching and English Literature for the degree programs awarded by the University of Greenwich.  She hold a PhD in English Literature and Visual Culture from the University of Cambridge, U.K, an MA in Modern Literature and Culture from the University of York, U.K. and a Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (DELTA). Her research interests include visual literacy in language learning contexts, contemporary British literature and intermedial relations.
