New York College (NYC) commemorates the BICENTENNIAL of the 12-year Greek Struggle of Independence (1821-1833). To this end, NYC proudly dedicates the academic year 2023-2024 to the legacy of Lord Byron’s influential and leading role in Greece (1823-1824).<\/strong><\/p>\n

Initiating the celebration of\u00a0Lord Byron’s bicentennial in Greece<\/strong>\u00a0(1823-1824), NYC students inaugurated the events by\u00a0laying a wreath<\/a>\u00a0at the Lord Byron monument, in front of the\u00a0NYC Athens Campus<\/a>, on Christmas Eve 2023. This gesture, accompanied by the placement of an honorary plaque, marked exactly\u00a0200 years<\/strong>\u00a0since Lord Byron’s courageous\u00a0sailing<\/a>\u00a0to Messolonghi (December 24, 1823, Julian Calendar), where he stood on the forefront of the Greek War of Independence.<\/p>\n

One month later, on January 25, 2024 (Gregorian Calendar), commemorating exactly two centuries since Lord Byron was declared\u00a0“civil and military Chief”<\/strong>\u00a0of the Greek forces in Western Greece, in the region of Messolonghi and Nafpaktos (January 25, 1824), NYC inaugurated the\u00a0Lord Byron Room<\/a>\u00a0on its\u00a0\u00a0Athens Campus<\/a>. The ceremony was marked by the active participation of the Greek State: Major General\u00a0Dimitrios Oikonomidis<\/strong>\u00a0cut the inauguration ribbon, officially \u00a0representing\u00a0General Dimitrios Houpis, Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of Greece.<\/strong>\u00a0Among the distinguished attendees were\u00a0four-time Olympian Pyrros Dimas<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Archimandrite Aristarchos Grekas,<\/strong>\u00a0assistant professor at the School of Theology of the\u00a0National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the opening ceremony,\u00a0Elias S. Foutsis,<\/strong>\u00a0Hon PhD,<\/em>\u00a0President and Founder of New York College, emphasized the significance of these events in his\u00a0speech<\/a>, stating,\u00a0“NYC’s anniversary events and actions not only reflect our historical PAST but are also pivotal for our FUTURE. For whoever does not remember their history is doomed to relive it.”<\/em><\/p>\n
