When people hear that someone is a psychologist, what usually comes to mind is a couch in a clinician\u2019s office and long conversations with an expert about their thoughts and feelings. In other words, the most common social and media representation of Psychology is Clinical Psychology.<\/p>\n

It is true that clinical psychologists represent a substantial and highly visible part of the field. Clinical psychologists have a primary focus on psychopathology and psychotherapy. In simpler terms, they usually work in clinical settings (e.g. hospitals, outpatient clinics, rehabilitation centers) or maintain a private practice, and work with people that may experience psychiatric or neurological disorders (e.g., depression, autism). Their work commonly involves evaluating concerns, such as anxiety, as well as helping individuals develop strategies to manage emotional and behavioral challenges. In addition to a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology, clinical psychologists undertake postgraduate training at master\u2019s or doctoral level and complete a considerable amount of supervised clinical practice\/internship.<\/p>\n

However, besides Clinical Psychology, the field of Psychology includes numerous subdisciplines, including both basic and applied research areas, which aim to understand human behavior and mental processes and apply this knowledge to solving real-world problems. For instance, the American Psychological Association (APA) currently recognizes 54 divisions representing distinct areas of specialization in Psychology (Lerner et al., 2025). These include Social Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Health Psychology and Cognitive Psychology, among many others.<\/p>\n

The main focus of Social Psychology is the way people influence and interact with one another. Social psychologists study interpersonal relationships, prejudice, conformity and group behavior. This area of Psychology is particularly relevant to our society today since the growth of social media has created new environments in which people interact and form relationships. A typical career path of a social psychologist includes a bachelor\u2019s degree in psychology as well as a master\u2019s in social psychology or a related field.<\/p>\n

Clinical Neuropsychology is the research area concerned with the relationship between brain function and thinking, emotions, and behavior. The primary responsibilities of a clinical neuropsychologist include the assessment of cognitive functions to assist in the diagnosis of psychiatric or neurological conditions as well as the development and implementation of rehabilitation programs (i.e., cognitive rehabilitation). Clinical neuropsychologists may work with individuals experiencing various conditions such as dementia, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, etc. Neuropsychologists can also work as researchers in clinical (e.g., hospitals) or academic (e.g., universities) settings. Becoming a neuropsychologist generally requires a bachelor\u2019s degree in Psychology as well as postgraduate training in Neuropsychology at master\u2019s or doctoral level, along with extensive supervised clinical experience.<\/p>\n

Lastly, Cognitive Psychology studies the way people think and process information. This may include the study of memory, attention, learning, language, decision-making, perception, etc. Many cognitive psychologists are researchers designing experiments, collecting data and analyzing them to answer specific research questions (e.g., Does listening to music while studying affect how well people remember information?). The findings from Cognitive Psychology can also be applied in education, technology, Artificial Intelligence and healthcare. A career in Cognitive Psychology usually requires a bachelor\u2019s degree in Psychology, master\u2019s and (usually) a doctoral degree in Cognitive (Neuro)Science as well as strong skills in Statistics, research methodology, programming and academic writing.<\/p>\n

The examples above represent a limited selection of the many areas within the discipline of Psychology. One of the most intriguing aspects of Psychology is the way it connects with other fields of science. As psychologists investigate complex questions about human behavior, they often collaborate with experts from other fields, such as biologists, sociologists, computer scientists, etc. These collaborations have contributed to the development of new interdisciplinary fields, such as Cognitive Neuroscience, Psycholinguistics and Social Neuroscience. These emerging fields require a combination of skills and knowledge and employ professionals that research some of the hot topics in the field such as the study of consciousness, gender identity, perception and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n
