Dual Honors for President Elias Foutsis!

New York College President, Mr. Elias Foutsis, was awarded two Honorary Doctorate Degrees by the University of Bolton at the graduation ceremony held on July 18th, 2013. Dr. George Holmes, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bolton stated that the university is not just honoring a businessman but a true pioneer in education. In addition, he stated that it is rather difficult to determine which of the two is more important since one compliments the other and one is a pre-requisite for the other for a man with such a noteworthy achievement in his country and abroad. Dr. Holmes concluded that President Elias Foutsis is awarded the Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration and the Honorary Doctorate in Education. Both Doctorate degrees were awarded to President Foutsis by Baroness Morris, Chancellor of the University of Bolton.

 

New York College: Crossroads of Cultures

The New York College (NYC) Educational Group celebrated the end of the academic year by holding splendid graduation ceremonies in Athens, Thessaloniki, Prague, and Tirana. Graduates received their degrees from academics representing such collaborating institutions as the State University of New York, Empire State College, University of Greenwich,  University of Bolton, Université Toulouse, Institut Universitaire Kurt Bosch, and Pôle ESG-Paris School of Business. 

Honorary guest of NYC Thessaloniki this year was Victoria Hislop, a renowned writer, while at the graduation ceremony at NYC Athens, University of Bolton Vice Chancellor Dr. George Holmes bestowed upon Ms. Anna Vissi, a renowned singer and music performer, the Honorary Doctorate in Arts for her outstanding contribution in the field of music. Moreover, present at the ceremony was the Rector of the International University of Applied Sciences-Bad Honnef of Germany, Prof. Peter Thuy with which NYC has begun a new collaboration.
 
On behalf of the Greek Ministry of Education Mr. N. Kaskavelis, Advisor on Higher Education Affairs, representing the Minister of Education Mr. Loverdos, in his address at the ceremony stated that the international collaborations with Universities in countries with long tradition in education, and its respective networks of instructors and graduates ensure that graduates have the skills of flexibility, adaptation and commitment to innovation.
 
Representing the NYC Educational Group Alumni was Ms. Zuzana Stepanovska, Miss Czech Republic and currently working for the American consultancy company A.T. Kearney, who graduated with distinction from the University of New York in Prague, member institution of the NYC Educational Group.   
 
Also invited at the graduation ceremony was Ms. Zoi Tiganouria, the renowned Greek composer and accordionist who performed music from around the world.

LECTURE BY Η.Ε. THE AMBASSADOR OF HUNGARY AT NEW YORK COLLEGE

 On Thursday November 13th,  H.E. the Ambassador of Hungary Ms. Eszter  Sandorfi, delivered a lecture in the pioneering  New York College’s Series of Lectures “The Ambassadors ’ Academic Tribune”, focusing on Hungary’s  efforts to stabilize and promote its economy and security. She referred to the unsatisfactory state of things during the Cold War, and the negative role of the then Communist regime. She also referred to the 1956 uprising and its putting down by the soviet troops, and, finally, the return of Hungary to democracy, its association with NATO and EU, and its successful efforts to overcome old psychological and social traumatic experiences as well as the economic crisis of 2008, and to develop and expand its economy and secure a safe and happy future for its people.  In 2009 Hungary was obliged to take a loan from the IMF and the EU of approximately 19 billion €. However, Hungary managed to stabilize further its economy, and set a record of growth. Investments have increased seriously and so did exports. Among the measures Hungary took in order to cope with the crisis, were: instead of austerity, emphasis on production, employment, tax reduction, extra taxes on banks, multinational corporations, and telecommunications, public investments to promote production and exports. Hungary tries to find new markets in Asia, the BRIC countries, e.tc. A documentary followed on cultural aspects of Hungary, and a session of questions and answers followed.

New York College at the International Quality Assurance Programme, UK

 Dr. Alexandra Kaoni, Deputy General Manager for Quality was selected by QAA, UK,  the independent body entrusted with monitoring and advising on standards and quality in UK higher education, to attend an intensive five-day course for Quality Managers from non-UK institutions and learn more about quality assurance in the UK as well as benefit from expert input and sharing experience with other international delegates. The course was led by Dr. Anca Greer and Janet Bohrer and speakers included Dr. Anthony McClaran, Chief Executive of QAA. Following the completion of a project, successful delegates were presented with the QAA Certificate awarded by Sir Rodney Brooke, Chair of the QAA Board. The event took place at the impressive buildings of the British Academy in London.

International Conference by New York College & the University of Greenwich, UK on Second Language Acquisition and Research

New York College Department of English Language Learning and Teaching in partnership with the University of Greenwich Centre for Applied Research and Outreach in Language Education (CAROLE) organized the first international conference of its kind on “Making Research in Second Language Acquisition Usable for Instruction and Instructors”.  Speakers from Greece, UK, Italy, Hong Kong, Spain and Finland presented their research findings and the implications for language teaching, for a number of options on methodological issues such as teaching grammar, correcting errors, creating conditions for interaction and negotiation of meaning and developing effective instructional tasks.  Researchers, policy makers, students, and foreign language teachers had the opportunity to get clear insights on our understanding of learning processes and instructional techniques.

 

Participants praised the excellent organization of the conference which was undertaken by the Professors of Language and Linguistics at New York College, Dr. Maria Kamilaki and Dr. Sylvia Karastathi.

LECTURE OF AMBASSADOR OF SWITZERLAND AT NEW YORK COLLEGE

On Thursday November 6th,  H.E. the Ambassador of Switzerland Mr. Lorenzo Amberg delivered a lecture at New York College in the pioneering circle of lectures “The Ambassadors’ Academic Tribune” on the history and role of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), as well as Switzerland’s role regarding international crisis management and resolution of conflicts. The Ambassador lauded Ioannis Kapodistrias’ very constructive role in Switzerland’s constitutional development. A session of questions and answers followed and the many dozens of multi-national students had the opportunity to satisfy their academic curiosity on various important matters that preoccupied their minds. Mr. N.Katsaros, Vice President of New York College, welcomed the Ambassador on behalf of the President Mr. E. Foutsis, and Professor Mr. P.I.Karafotias, in charge of the Seminar, presented the Ambassador to the students and served as moderator. 

SOUTH AFRICAN AMBASSADOR’S LECTURE IN “THE AMBASSADORS ACADEMIC TRIBUNE” AT NEW YORK COLLEGE

 On Thursday 30 October,  H.E. the Ambassador of South Africa, Mr. Repulane Makgetlas,  delivered a lecture in “The Ambassadors’ Academic Tribune” at New York College on the history, civilization, and modern international relations of South Africa, the “cradle of civilization”. He focused on the criminal system of apartheid that was imposed by the colonial powers, and the struggle of the South Africans under the great leader NELSON MANDELA to abolish it.

A film on apartheid, brought by the Ambassador, was shown to the many dozens of multinational students, who attended, and were very much impressed.  
The lecture was attended by the President of New York College Mr.Elias Foutsis, and the Greek Ambassador a.h. Mr. Spyros Theocharopoulos, who had served in S. Africa, and spoke at the end of the event to the students about the Greek community in S. Africa.
Professor P.I.Karafotias, Director of Diplomatic and International Studies, and in charge of the Seminar, welcomed the S. African Ambassador as well as the honorable guests.

Tricks and Treats at New York College!

 The NYC Office of Student Affairs held a Halloween event at the Amalias Back yard on the 30th of October from 14:00-18:00. New Yorkers gathered for traditional pumpkin- carving and the team treated everyone to an excessive amount of sugar as is customary. The NYC Psychology Club raised money with a bake sale full of American Style Cupcakes! Special Thanks to Eleni Alevizos and “Sweet Cupcakes Kalamata” for the donation of the delicious treats.

CONFERENCE ON THE 69 YEARS OF UN

 On the occasion of the 69th Anniversary of the United Nations Organization, the Regional Office of UN in Brussels, the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, the National Commission for UNICEF, the National Commission for UNESCO, the Hellenic Association of International Law and International Relations, the International Organizations Watch, and New York College, organized on Friday, October 24th {UN Day} 2014, a Conference on the topic: The Role of UN in the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and the Middle East, at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs - Amphitheater “Yannos Kranidiotis”.

Following an impressive performance by the Choir of the Ministry of Culture, short salutations were made by Mrs. Dionysia-Theodora Avgerinopoulou, Parliamentary Deputy and Member of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the Environment, Mr.Dimitris Fatouros , Desk Officer of UNRIC in Brussels, Mrs Kaity Kehayoglou, Officer of the UNHCR Office, Mrs Kaity Tzitzikostas, President of the National Commission for UNESCO, Ambassador Ad Honoris Mr. Haris Karabarbounis, First Vice President of the Hellenic Association of International Law and International Relations, and Ambassador Ad Honoris,  Mrs. Maria Sotiropoulou-Arvanitis, Secretary-General of the International Organizations Watch, and Mr. Elias Foutsis, President of New York College. Then, Professor Theodore Kouloumbis spoke on the role of UN in the Cyprus problem, Professor Alexander Koutsis on the role of UN in the Middle East, and Mr. Konstantine Filis, Director of Research of the Institute of International Relations, on the role of UN in the Balkans. Journalist Mr.Serafeim Fyntanides served as Moderator. Professor and Director of Diplomatic and International Studies of New York College, Mr P.I. Karafotias, served as Master of Ceremonies. Note: New York College is member of the Global Compact of the United Nations Organization.
The Conference was crowned with great success despite the bad weather. Among the many personalities we observed in the crowded amphitheater were: HE the Ambassador of the Republic of Slovakia, Mr. Peter Michalko, former Minister George Romaios,  Ad Honoris Ambassadors Mr. Vassilios Eikosipentarchos, Ad Honoris Supreme Court Prosecutor Mr. Athanassios Kafiris, University Professor Mr. Panayotis Siskos, Ad Honoris Director- General of the Ministry of Education Athanassios Tjioumis, etc. Many students and hundreds of people also attended the Conference.
A reception followed, courtesy gesture by New York College.

INDONESIAN AMBASSADOR’S LECTURE AT NYC

 On Thursday 23 October 2014, HE the Indonesian Ambassador Mr. Benny Bahanadewa gave a lecture at New York College, in the pioneering Seminar “The Ambassadors’ Academic Tribune”, in the presence of NYC Vice President Mr. N.Katsaros, who welcomed the Ambassador on behalf of the President Mr.Elias Foutsis. The Ambassador was presented to the many dozens of multinational students by the Professor and Director of Diplomatic and International Studies Mr P.I.Karafotias.

Following an impressive documentary on Indonesia, the Ambassador referred to Indonesia’ history and culture, the country’s very important strategic position with its 17,000 islands, and, also, its struggle for independence from Colonialism. He mentioned various significant periods and Indonesia’s hard efforts to develop. He particularly focused his lecture on Indonesia’s foreign policy and its efforts to promote stability in the region and achieve peace, cooperation, development and progress with “zero enemies ” as he underlined. He elaborated on his country’s cooperation with the ASEAN nations, EU, and OAS in order to stabilize peace, and tackle serious problems like crime, narcotics, corruption, climate change etc. He also referred to Indonesia’s participation in various international summits on crucial issues. He   stressed Indonesia’s devotion to the United
Nations, and its contribution to the UN Peace-Keeping operations in the world.

NEW YORK COLLEGE ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES 2014-2015

 1.      Mini-Soccer Intramural Tournament 2014-2015. Games take place at D.A.K. Ilioupolis mini soccer fields every Tuesday 21.00-23.00. Fields are behind EYDAP (Argyroupoleos Ave. and  Alimountos str. No 102, bus No 237, tel.: 210 9910283). If you want to participate to the NYC Mini Soccer Intramural Tournament 2014-2015, state your team (name of the team, at least 6 students’ names and two mobile telephone numbers) at the front desk Amalias, Kallitheas, or at sports@nyc.gr until Friday 24/10/14.

2.      Swimming trainings take place every day from Monday to Friday 15.30-16.30 at the swimming pool of the Athletic Center of Palaio Faliro (tram station “Trokadero”). Coach Mrs Elli Platanou, A.S. Pera.
3.      Basketball trainings take place every Friday 14.00-15.30 at “Vyzantino Athlitiko Kentro” basketball hall, Megali tou Genous Sxoli str., No 10, Kalamaki (Traxones).
4.      Latin Dancing lessons take place every Saturday 14.00-15.00 at Kallitheas’ building Library.
Participation in all the above athletic activities is for free!!
 
All athletic activities are going to start by 1st of November 2014.

ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΥΠΟΥ - Διάλεξη με αντικείμενο: «Το Οικουμενικό Σύμφωνο (Global Compact) του ΟΗΕ»

 Με επιτυχία πραγματοποιήθηκε την Τετάρτη στις 15 Οκτωβρίου, η διάλεξη με θέμα:«Το Οικουμενικό Σύμφωνο (Global Compact) του ΟΗΕ: Οι 10 αρχές του Οικουμενικού Συμφώνου, πεδία εφαρμογής στη σύγχρονη επιχείρηση και το πανεπιστήμιο. Τα οφέλη από τη συμμετοχή».

Η διάλεξη έγινε στο κεντρικό κτίριο του  NEW YORK COLLEGE, το οποίο είναι μέλος της  μεγάλης οικογένειας του Οικουμενικού Συμφώνου (UN Global Compact) του Οργανισμού Ηνωμένων Εθνών και στα πλαίσια των ενεργειών διάδοσης των Αρχών του Συμφώνου στη Κοινωνία (Communication On Progress).
Κεντρικός ομιλητής ήταν ο Κος. Δημήτρης Κατσαρέλλος Διευθυντής Δια Βίου Μάθησης, Εκπαίδευσης και Κατάρτισης Ενηλίκων του Ομίλου. Επίτιμος καλεσμένος ο κ. Μιχάλης Σπανός, Διευθύνων Σύμβουλος της εταιρείας Global Sustain, ο οποίος στα πλαίσια αλληλοϋποστήριξης των μελών του UN Global Compact, μας τίμησε με τη παρουσία του και προλόγισε τη διάλεξη.
 
Η θεματολογία της διάλεξης βασίστηκε στο σύγγραμμα «ΤΟ ΟΙΚΟΥΜΕΝΙΚΟ ΣΥΜΦΩΝΟ ΤΟΥ ΟΗΕ, ΠΕΔΙΟ ΔΡΑΣΗΣ ΓΙΑ ΑΕΙΦΟΡΕΣ ΕΠΙΧΕΙΡΗΜΑΤΙΚΕΣ ΔΡΑΣΕΙΣ», το οποίο επιμελήθηκε η δημοσιογράφος Φοίβη Πετροπούλου.
Η πρωτοβουλία του εκπαιδευτικού ομίλου NEW YORK COLLEGE χαιρετίστηκε με ενθουσιασμό από τα άτομα που παρευρέθησαν στη διάλεξη. Το κοινό αποτελούσαν κυρίως φοιτητές, μέλη της εκπαιδευτικής κοινότητας και στελέχη επιχειρήσεων και έδειξε ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον για το θέμα της διάλεξης, αφού συμμετείχε με δικές του ερωτήσεις είτε παραθέτοντας πληροφορίες είτε παραδείγματα.

Pioneering lecture from HE the Ambassador of India Mr. Tscwang Topden

HE the Ambassador of India Mr. Tscwang Topden delivered a lecture at the New York College, in the pioneering Seminar “The Ambassadors’ Academic  Tribune”, on Thursday, 16 October 2014, in which he elaborated on the history, culture and modern international relations and achievements of India, including its peacemaking e.tc. role in UN. He also referred to the excellent Greek –Indian relations in various domains. A  documentary preceded showing very impressive pictures from the rich cultural e.tc. life in modern India. The Ambassador was received by the Vice-President of NYC Dr.N. Katsaros and by the Professor and Director of Diplomatic and  International Studies Dr..P.Karafotias, who is in charge of the above Seminar and presented the Ambassador to the multinational
and multi numbered students who were enthusiastic from the Ambassadors’ speech and the documentary.

 To New York College, στα πλαίσια του πολύπλευρου ακαδημαϊκού του προγράμματος και με έμφαση τις διπλωματικές και διεθνείς σχέσεις, εγκαινιάζει ειδικό Σεμινάριο, το «Ακαδημακό Βήμα των Πρεσβευτών» { «The Ambassadors’ Academic Tribune”} στο οποίο συμμετέχουν ξένοι Πρέσβεις στην Ελλάδα, οι οποίοι πραγματεύονται σημαντικά θέματα της αρμοδιότητάς τους. To Σεμινάριο απευθύνεται στους φοιτητές που φιλοδοξούν να ειδικευθούν στις Πολιτικές Επιστήμες, Διεθνείς Σχέσεις, Κοινωνιολογία και Επικοινωνία. Το Σεμινάριο επίσης απευθύνεται και σε φοιτητές και επιστήμονες που ενδιαφέρονται να παρακολουθήσουν μόνον ορισμένες διαλέξεις  και θα τους χορηγηθεί βεβαίωση παρακολούθησης.

Το Σεμινάριο γίνεται κάθε Πέμπτη απόγευμα στο New York College, Αμαλίας 38 Σύνταγμα.
